UPEI VRE Project

This Wiki is in support of the UPEI Virtual Research Environment project.

Brainstorming Session

These notes started with the brainstorming session on November 30, which was attended by Mark Leggott, Dave Cormier, Franck Berthe, Dawn Hooper, Suzanne Jones, Grant Johnson, Blair Vessey and Dave Cairns.

Background Documents

  • VreFramework - General notes and a framework as prepared by Dave Cormier. This document combined with notes from others will eventually provide the application framework for the UPEI VRE.
  • Research Life Cycle and Architecture (Notes from Mark Leggott's discussion with Chuck Humphrey)
  • Chuck Humphrey Research Life Cycle - lifecycle-science060308.2.pdf

Issues/Questions

  • Loosely Coupled model - ie. a variety of separate applications that are tied together by an application like Pageflakes - http://www.pageflakes.com/.
  • Consolidated model - ie. a variety of applications that are tied together via an umbrella applications (like Drupal) and where individual components or applications can be tied together via a SOAP-like layer.
  • Drupal iFrame type functionality? Can we integrate apps into Drupal using an iFrame?

Next Steps

  • Franck Berthe and MHL
    • Create a VRE space using Drupal for the Mollusc Health Lab.
    • Use the vre.upei.ca/mhl.
    • Use vre.upei.ca root as a index to VRE space.
    • Use the individual sites within a single drupal instance.
    • Encourage people to join who want to participate re the research community.
    • Components: News, Forum, Book, RefWorks.
    • Refworks: Create a RefWorks database for MHL; add a RefShare page; send some Endnote output for testing in RefWorks; enable RefWorks RSS into Drupal page.
    • News: new announcements; recent changes; notification by e-mail.
    • Book: lab book, with recipes; currently Word documents.
    • Collaboration: DimDim access; test with Franck students in a non-production mode.
    • Identity Management: create groups in MHL to match your research groups; base on levels of access to the components and documents; use organic groups as per Drupal; use internal Drupal user management; investigate options re OpenID, Shibbloeth.
    • Repository: use the DSpace Research community; create a sub-community; add some sample documents; Mark and Franck to provide some article pre/post-prints.
    • Resources: look at assigning a student to work with the VRE team; possibly from Beat.
    • Training: Provide a series of VRE training sessions with Franck's group; create training material as Camtasia modules; Dave and Grant to look at OS versions.
    • Project Management: provide regular feedback to the group in meetings; solicit feedback in the vre.upei.ca space in the appropriate forum; create a testbed VRE space which can be used to; update the list of links on the VRE page; install a PM application.
    • Architecture: creating 2 installs of drupal; one production/demo system; one sandbox version; use config files to modify for the specific VRE spaces; create a list of possible components.
    • Searching: create a custom MHL federated searching module; plugin to drupal.
  • Annabel Cohen and CMTC
    • Create a test Drupal space for discussion at the Digital Library demo that Mark will give the week of Dec 11.
